Comparison of the Photocatalytic Behavior of TiO2 Coatings Elaborated by Different Thermal Spraying Processes

Abstract: This paper proposes a comparative study on the microstructure and photocatalytic performances of titanium dioxide coatings elaborated by various thermal spraying methods (plasma spraying in atmospheric conditions, suspension plasma spraying, and high-velocity oxyfuel spraying). Agglomerated spray dried anatase TiO 2 powder was used as feedstock material for spraying. Morphology and microstructural characteristics of the coatings were studied mainly by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The pho… Show more

“…So far, the development of TiO 2 coatings with improved photoactive and photoelectrochemical properties has primarily concentrated on the methods to synthesize the TiO 2 coating, [27,34,58] the optimization of the following heat treatments [32] or the doping of the coatings [56,59,60]. However, as mentioned above, also the selection of the substrate material plays a key role with respect to the properties of the coating.…”

“…Due to these numerous applications, there has been a significant level of research into the method of deposition of TiO 2 . This has led to the development of various deposition processes such as sputtering [2][3][4], sol gel [5] and thermal spraying [6][7][8] amongst others.…”

“…However, in most of the study there was a high temperature effect on the spray feedstock, which may lead to the phase transformation from anatase to rutile ( . Although it was reported that the high-temperature flame can be avoided for TiO 2 coating deposition by conventional cold spray, it is much difficult to deposit thick coating with a thickness more than [10][11][12][13][14][15].…”
