Comparison of the performance of serological kits for Helicobacter pylori infection with European and Asian study populations

Abstract: Most commercial kits for the detection of Helicobacter pylori were developed and validated with Western populations, and some have been found to perform less well with Asian populations. This study compared the performances of three serological kits with Swedish and Vietnamese peptic ulcer patients and asymptomatic individuals. The Pyloriset EIA-GIII and HM-CAP ELISA kits indicated that Asian populations had lower antibody titres to H. pylori than European populations. Despite the difference, the Pyloriset EIA… Show more

“…Over ninety percent of whom were CagA (116kDa) seropositive in accordance with our previous genotyping studies on Iranian H. pylori strains as well as serology findings from other developing countries such as Northeastern Thailand (Chomvarin et al, 2009). In agreement with the latter study and others (Hoang et al, 2006), we found the least seropositivity toward the 35kDa protein.…”

“…Immunoreactivity to the above mentioned H. pylori proteins including high and low molecular weight proteins has been demonstrated to be associated with age, gender (Jaber, 2005) and ethnicity (Hoang et al, 2006;Epplein et al, 2011). We have, therefore, analyzed our data by multivariate logistic regression model adjusting for the three mentioned potential confounder and found immunoreactivity towards H. pylori 35kDa (low molecular weight) protein drastically reduced the risk of GC by 60 percent.…”

“…27,28 UBT has sensitivity and specificity .95%. 30,31 Patients who have been positive for H. pylori may remain seropositive for up to 4 years after eradication. 26,29 Consequently, most studies using serology as a diagnostic test tend to overestimate H. pylori prevalence.…”

“…In children, the sensitivities of Helicoblot 2.0 (32, 34) and Helicoblot 2.1 (26,28) varied between 95.5 and 100% and 80 and 98.6%, respectively, and the specificities between 85.7 and 88% and 87.1 and 100%, respectively. In adults, Helicoblot 2.1 showed sensitivities of 93.4 to 99% and specificities of 88 to 98% (12,18,25,30,44). After eradication therapy, the seroreversion rates have been low, less than 10% (14), and the current infection marker (CIM) has been shown to be unreliable (18).…”
