“…However, a recent study showed that post-operative refractive values are no different between hydrophobic and hydrophilic acrylic IOLs 3 months post-operatively. 20 In addition, the optic diameters of both types of IOLs used in this study were the same. Long-acting gas may also influence myopic shifts of the IOL.…”

“…Suh et al [32] evaluated the effect of hydrophilic and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs on PCO. Over the 3-year follow-up of cases, the authors reported that PCO developed in 20.3% of those who had undergone hydrophilic acrylic IOL implantation and 6.8% of those who had undergone hydrophobic acrylic IOL implantation, and they performed Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in all of the cases that developed PCO.…”

“…Before, during and after pH adjustment of the supersaturated solutions, inert atmosphere over the solution was ensured by pumping through the solutions, pure nitrogen (99.99%, Linde Hellas, Ltd., Schematari, Greece) saturated with water vapor. Following the verification of the stability of the supersaturated solutions, as shown by the stability of the adjusted pH value for at least two hours, a set of hydrophilic IOL lenses (3)(4)(5), mounted firmly on a special holder which allowed exposure of both the anterior and the posterior sides, were immersed in the supersaturated solution. The pH of the solutions was monitored.…”

“…Various biomaterials have been used since 1949, for the fabrication of IOL and since then research is intense concerning materials development and biocompatibility. Over the past two decades, calcification has been reported with a few hydrophilic IOLs, and subsequently, a number of these IOLs were explanted [3][4][5][6]. Calcification response after IOL implantation depends on both the composition of the aqueous humor (AH) and on the material of construction of the IOLs.…”
