Comparison of the LMA Supreme vs the i‐gel™ in paralysed patients undergoing gynaecological laparoscopic surgery with controlled ventilation*

Abstract: SummaryWe compared the efficacy of the inflatable cuff of the LMA Supreme TM against the non-inflatable i-gel TM cuff in providing an adequate seal for laparoscopic surgery in the Trendelenburg position in 100 female patients. There was no difference in our primary outcome, oropharyngeal leak pressure, between the LMA Supreme and the i-gel (mean (SD) 26.4 (5.1) vs 25.0 (5.7) cmH 2 O, respectively; p = 0.18). Forty-seven (94%) LMA Supremes and 48 (96%) i-gels were successfully inserted on the first attempt, wit… Show more

“…(9) Similarly, Teoh et al's trial of both the i-gel and Supreme SADs demonstrated comparable ease and duration of insertion between the two tested devices. (14) A meta-analysis comparing the i-gel and Supreme SADs also concluded that there was no statistical difference in device placement time and first attempt insertion success rates. (15) Nevertheless, other researchers have previously highlighted the i-gel's higher first attempt success rates and its shorter insertion time as compared with the ProSeal SAD.…”

“…Six of the studies compared the LMA Supreme with the LMA Proseal. 10,[13][14][15][16][17] The remaining studies compared the LMA Supreme with the LMA Classic, 23 i-gel, [18][19][20] facemask, 21 or endotracheal tube. 22 In the six RCTs comparing the LMA Supreme with the LMA Proseal, 418 patients were identified and 295 (70%) of those were female.…”
