Comparison of the influence of ozone and laser therapies on pain, swelling, and trismus following impacted third-molar surgery

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the ozone and laser application in the management of pain, swelling, and trismus after third-molar surgery. Sixty consecutive patients with asymptomatic impacted mandibular third molars were recruited into the study. Patients were randomized into three treatment groups of 20 patients each: two study groups (group 1 = low-level laser therapy (LLLT), group 2 = ozone therapy) and a control group (no-LLLT or ozone therapy). Twenty teeth extractions were performed in each… Show more

“…Ozone positively influences cell energy, oxygen metabolism, antioxidant defense system, microcirculation in tissues. It improves wound healing, modulates immune system, and acts as an antibacterial agent [11][12][13] . Femoral defect model has been regarded as an appropriate experimental model of bone regeneration.…”

“…The minimal pain during and after laserassisted surgical procedures has also been reported by previous authors. 22,23 However, the possibility of the placebo effect because of treatment with a highquality laser apparatus should also be considered. 24,25 The increases in sulcus depth were on average 0.18 mm in the conventional CSF group and 0.36 mm in the laser-aided CSF group.…”

“…The precise mechanisms underlying these activities may be linked with antimicrobial property of ozone as well as amplification of the immune response through release of growth factors, interferons and interleukins [20] . Ozone may constitute a saf and effective therapeutic option by means of influencing oxygen metabolism, cell energy, anti-oxidant defense mechanisms, immunomodulation and vascular system [21] .…”
