Abstract:Fracturing fluid compositions have historically been formulated to achieve desired rheological properties under the conditions of pump time and temperature in the subsurface. However, fluid selection best practices came into being when conventional and mixed conventional and tight-gas sandstone reservoirs dominated oil and gas operations. Those reservoirs consisted mainly of quartzose sandstones cemented by quartz overgrowths or calcite. Those rocks were relatively unreactive to water-based fracturing fluids, … Show more
“…The industry has realized that using water-based fracturing fluids in these clay-rich shales can cause lots of changes to their flow and rock mechanical properties (Chong et al 2010;Akrad et al 2011;Alramahi and Sundberg 2012;LaFollette and Carman 2013;Pedlow and Sharma 2014). Maintaining a conductive fracture is a challenge in formations that are clay-rich and soft in nature.…”

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
