Comparison of the Gastric Acid Responses to Pentagastrin and Insulin Hypoglycemia in Male and Female Ulcer Patients

Abstract: The 30-min peak acid output (PAO30) to pentagastrin and insulin hypoglycemia has been compared in male and female ulcer patients. In male duodenal ulcer, prepyloric gastric ulcer and corporal gastric ulcer patients the PAO30 to pentagastrin exceeded that to insulin; in female duodenal ulcer patients the PAO30 to pentagastrin tended to be higher than to insulin but the difference was not significant. The PAO30 to both pentagastrin and insulin was higher in male than in female duodenal ulcer patients but the rat… Show more

“…Insulin and 2 DG produced acid response in all 21 patients according to our criterion [4,5] and to the criteria of Hollander [10]. The results of the present study are in accordance with the findings of D uke et al [2]; the acid response to 2 DG appeared earlier than to insulin, and in 17 of 21 patients the response to 2 DG was higher than to insulin.…”

“…The age distribution was comparable in the two studies. Our results in the present and previous study [5] therefore suggest that the PAO 30 to 2 DG is close to or does not differ from the PAO 30 to pentagastrin in spite of the dose of 2 DG probably being submaximal and that of pentagastrin being maximal for acid secretion.…”

“…Acid was titrated against 0.1 NaOH with phenol red as an indicator and expressed as mEq/15 minutes. We regard the insulin test as positive if blood glucose once fell below 40 mg/ml; then both criteria according to Hollander and to Emits and Borg were positive [21,22].…”
