Comparison of the functional features of the pump organs of Anopheles sinensis and Aedes togoi

Abstract: Mosquitoes act as vectors for severe tropical diseases. Mosquito-borne diseases are affected by various factors such as environmental conditions, host body susceptibility, and mosquito feeding behavior. Among these factors, feeding behavior is affected by the feeding pump system located inside the mosquito head and also depends on the species of mosquito. Therefore, the 3D morphological structures of the feeding pumps of Aedes togoi and Anopheles sinensis were comparatively investigated using synchrotron X-ray… Show more

“…In the head, the aorta associates with the dorsal plate of the pharyngeal pump ( Fig. 2A-C), which is one of two pumps that facilitate feeding (Kim et al, 2011;Ha et al, 2015). Upon entering the prothorax, the aorta bends dorsally and then straightens such that it travels near the lateral midline with a slight, ventral slant as it crosses the mesothorax and metathorax ( Fig.…”

“…A valve-like organ is located between both of these pumps and prevents backflow in the conduit connecting both structures. Relevant to blood feeding behaviours, the recent implementation of synchrotron X-ray microscopic computed tomography in malaria research, allowed for a detailed description of the feeding pump system located inside the head of Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes (Ha et al, 2015). The study concluded that morphological and functional features of the pump system strongly influence the feeding behaviour of female mosquitoes, therefore influencing the transmission success of various pathogens to humans.…”

“…To date, many techniques such as micro-computed tomography [7], microscopic and histological analysis [8,9], and X-ray imaging [10] have been implemented for mosquito studies. However, these techniques require time-consuming sectioning processes, a complex system design, or a long imaging acquisition time.…”
