Comparison of the Efficiency and Safety of Total Ankle Replacement and Ankle Arthrodesis in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta‐analysis

Abstract: While osteoarthritis is a common degenerative disease, ankle osteoarthritis is a subdivision that has received little attention. Two effective ways to treat osteoarthritis of the ankle are total ankle replacement (TAR) and ankle arthrodesis (AAD). Whether TAR or AAD is more beneficial for treatment is controversial. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the efficiency (clinical outcome and patient satisfaction) and safety (complications and survival) of these two procedures. The Preferred Reporting … Show more

“…There is strong evidence that the survival rate of implants with a coronal varus deformity before surgery is not different from that of implants without a varus deformity. Preoperative valgus deformity has a greater negative impact on implant survival 24 . Studies on anatomical measurements have been performed on the three‐dimensional model of the ankle joint.…”

“…Preoperative valgus deformity has a greater negative impact on implant survival. 24 Studies on anatomical measurements have been performed on the three‐dimensional model of the ankle joint. For example, the asymmetric shape of the medial talus trochlea is related to the fixed or changing axis of rotation at the ankle joint.…”

“…As this is a high-energy event, the risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis of the ankle joint is high [20]. Lengthening procedures that allow for increased ankle joint range of motion can reduce the risk of post-traumatic arthritis and increase the likelihood of success with treatment via ankle arthrodesis [21].…”

“…For example, Maffulli et al [ 6 ] in their review of the literature concluded that TAR could not be routinely recommended for the management of ankle arthritis. However, Li et al [ 7 ] concluded that there is no statistically significant difference between TAR and AA with regard to clinical outcome, patient satisfaction, complications, and survival. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the rates of complications and reoperations at both 30 days and one year among patients who have undergone TAR and AA.…”
