Comparison of the efficacy of natural-based and synthetic biocides to disinfect silicone and stainless steel surfaces

Abstract: New biocidal solutions are needed to combat effectively the evolution of microbes developing antibiotic resistance while having a low or no environmental toxicity impact. This work aims to assess the efficacy of commonly used biocides and natural-based compounds on the disinfection of silicone and stainless steel (SS) surfaces seeded with differentStaphylococcus aureusstrains. Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined for synthetic (benzalkonium chloride-BAC, glutaraldehyde-GTA,ortho-phthalaldehyde-OPA a… Show more

“…Recent studies demonstrated cuminaldehyde has antimicrobial effects, presenting a MIC of 0.311 mg/ml and 0.650-4.98 mg/ml for E. coli and S. aureus; respectively [30,32,43]. In our study, cuminaldehyde was antimicrobial against all tested bacteria; however, it was found to be more effective against E. coli.…”

“…16 Moreover, appropriate personal protective equipment should be worn to avoid inhalation, and careful consideration must be given to chemical use, concentrations, room ventilation, and application technique. 17 In the case of hand disinfection, nonirritating soaps and alcohol-based hand sanitizers should be used instead of detergents and hand sanitizers containing benzalkonium chloride, which can exacerbate skin damage and irritation. 10 Use of hand sanitizers, though, should be limited, as they can raise the risk of infection by disrupting the normal flora and irritating the skin, which normally acts as a barrier to harmful agents.…”

“…e role of contaminated textiles, environmental surfaces, and medical devices in the transmission of health-associated pathogens and the development of microbial resistance has been well reported [12,13]. ere is a need for efficient therapy for bacterial diseases [14] and to search for alternative compounds that can be used as surface and textile decontaminates [15].…”
