Abstract: Comparison of the effects of sertraline and agomelatine on sleep quality, sexual functioning and metabolic parameters in patients with major depressive disorder, Psychiatry and Clinical Psychopharmacology, 29:3, 257-263, ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: This research aims to compare the effects of sertraline and agomelatine on outpatients diagnosed with a "major depressive episode" in terms of sleep quality, sexual functioning, and metabolic parameters related to metabolic syndrome. METHODS:This observational, open-labelle… Show more

“…Agomelatine and escitalopram were suggested as favorable balanced antidepressants which may be explained based on their pharmacological profiles. Agomelatine, combining norepinephrine and dopamine disinhibition (NDDI) plus melatonergic agonism [44], has a favorable adverse effect profile mostly due to the fact that it does not affect sexual functioning, weight gain, or metabolic syndrome, and positively regulates sleep quality [45,46]. The balance benefit observed in the present analysis for agomelatine is thus due to its relatively good tolerability and not due to superior efficacy.…”

“…Compared to other antidepressants, it possesses a favorable side-effect profile, with dizziness being reported as the only significant issue. Research on agomelatine's effect on weight remains scarce but suggests an absence of any significant changes [113]. In murine models, a reduction in melatoninergic signaling has been associated with weight gain and insulin dysfunction.…”
