Comparison of the Effectiveness and Safety of Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation and Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation in Pediatric Glaucoma

Abstract: TSCP and ECP are safe, effective, and comparable treatments for pediatric glaucomas. The results suggest that TSCP and ECP may be considered first-line therapy to achieve control of IOP in all forms of pediatric glaucoma. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus 2014;51(2):120-127.].

“…Overall, 53% of patients achieved success (defined as IOP < 24 mmHg and IOP reduction > 15% with or without medications). Contrary to these results, a retrospective chart review study by Kraus et al [ 70 ] found that ECP is an effective option in pediatric glaucoma cases. The authors compared data from 52 eyes of 43 patients who underwent ECP and 72 eyes of 56 patients who underwent transcleral CPC.…”

“…[17][18][19][20][21][22] Endoscopic CPC (ECP) studies in veterinary ophthalmology are lacking, but studies comparing transscleral CPC (TSCP) and ECP in pediatric glaucoma did not show a significant difference in surgical outcome, both offering a moderate long-term IOP control (66.7% and 62% success respectively). 23 At present, diode laser glaucoma therapy, TSCP, and ECP are used for the treatment of primary and secondary glaucoma in canine, feline, and equine patients.…”

“…Sie fanden eine Drucksenkung von ca. 29 % bei ts-CPC und 33 % bei ECP ohne einen statistisch signifikanten Unterschied und einem vertretbaren Risikoprofil [28]. Die wohl größten Nachteile der ECP sind der invasive Charakter dieses intraokulären Eingriffs, die Anschaffungs-und Unterhaltskosten und eine flache Lernkurve im Vergleich zu transskleralen Verfahren.…”
