Comparison of the Distribution and Occurrence of Fusarium graminearum and Deoxynivalenol in Hard Red Winter Wheat for 1993‐1996

Abstract: Hard red winter wheat samples collected from different locations in Kansas from the 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996 harvests were plated to determine Fusarium graminearum infection and analyzed for deoxynivalenol by thin‐layer and gas chromatography. Rainfall, temperature, and cultivar were important factors affecting the severity of F. graminearum infection as well as deoxynivalenol production. The 1993 and 1995 growing seasons had high percentages of samples infected with F. graminearum and contaminated with deox… Show more

“…An important toxin produced by this fungus is deoxynivalenol (DON or vomitoxin). High rainfall, especially during the flowering to harvest period, favors high scab infection and DON formation (Trigo-Stockli et al 1995). Levels of DON generally correlate with levels of infection (McMullen et al 1993;Sinha and Savard 1997;Trigo-Stockli et al 1995, 1998.…”

“…A strong seasonal variation of incidence and severity of contamination by DON has been observed, depending also on the geographical origin of the samples and wheat varieties (Trigo-Stockli et al 1998;Pascale et al 2002;Gladys et al 2003;Manthey et al 2004).…”

“…Data on the occurrence of Fusarium mycotoxins in durum wheat are quite limited, although the presence of DON, also at levels >2,000 μg/kg, has been reported in samples affected by Fusarium head blight. A strong seasonal variation of incidence and severity of contamination by DON has been observed, depending also on the geographical origin of the samples and wheat varieties (Trigo-Stockli et al 1998;Pascale et al 2002;Gladys et al 2003;Manthey et al 2004).…”
