Comparison of the corrosion behavior and surface morphology of NiTi alloy and stainless steels in sodium chloride solution

Abstract: The corrosion behavior of NiTi alloy and stainless steels (AISI 316L and X2CrNiMoN22-5-3) in 0.9% sodium chloride (0.154 moll-1) solution was investigated using open circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Microstructural analyses before and after electrochemical tests were performed with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The lowest corrosion current density has NiTi alloy and … Show more

“…During the potentiostatic treating of the alloy at the potential of -0.1 V vs. SCE in 0.1 moldm -3 NaOH + 0.2 moldm -3 NaCl conditions for reactions (1)(2)(3)(4)(5) exist, whose products are copper oxides and chlorides. These products are clearly visible in Figure 8a ( Figure 8b).…”

“…Electrochemical techniques are widely used for characterization of metalic materials. In the available literature it can be found a great number of papers describing the use of electrochemical measurements in that purpose, especially from the point of view of corrosion stability of metals in different media [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Austenitic stainless steels can also be employed in orthopedics since they have good mechanical properties and they are biocompatible [9]. The plasma nitriding techniques are known to improve both surface hardness and corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels at low temperatures.…”
