Comparison of the clinical, ultrasound, and CT findings in 13 dogs with gastric neoplasia

Abstract: Diagnosis of gastric tumors in dogs is difficult and is often obtained by biopsy following identification of a mass through ultrasound (US) or endoscopy. In human medicine, modalities such as CT and endoscopy are standard of care in the diagnosis and staging of gastric tumors. Although one veterinary study has described CT findings of gastric tumors in dogs using iatrogenic gas dilation, there are no veterinary studies that have directly compared the usefulness of US versus CT in the diagnosis and staging of t… Show more

“…However, FNA of malignant lesions have a higher percentage of correct diagnoses than benign ones. 24 When we compare the characteristics in the different imaging modalities between the cases of GL published in veterinary 1,[6][7][8][9][12][13][14][15]20,21 and human medicine 16,18 and also with the cases of our study, we can appreciate that there are many similarities between them. All GL are masses growing from the muscular layer, most of them localised in the area of the cardia.…”

“…This is possibly due to the low number of cases presented, which was not representative, or because locating this type of lesion in the pylorus and fundus is easier than in cardia, and that cases affecting the cardia are underestimated. Nevertheless, in a recent study of gastric tumours, 50% of the GL were located in the cardia, with 25% in the fundus and 25% in the body of the stomach 15 …”
