Comparison of the Bonfils and Levitan Optical Stylets for Tracheal Intubation: A Clinical Study

Abstract: The Bonfils and Levitan FPS™ scopes are rigid fibreoptic stylets that may assist routine or difficult intubation. This study compared the effectiveness of each in patients with predicted normal airways when used by specialist anaesthetists with no prior experience using optical stylets. Twelve anaesthetists and 324 elective surgical patients participated. Six anaesthetists were randomised to first intubate 20 patients with the Levitan scope (Phase 1) followed by a further seven patients with the Bonfils scope … Show more

“…Similarly, the reported average success rate for the Shikani Seeing Stylet in normal and difficult airways was 89% and 77%, respectively. Two studies have evaluated the Levitan stylet in unselected patients . Successful tracheal intubation during the first attempt was between 57% and 62% .…”

“…Data collected using simulators always bear limitations concerning the translation to medical reality. A duration of 14 s until successful intubation and ventilation using a Bonfils after only four trials is obviously lower than that published for application in patients [ 38 ]. This study was conducted in an environment that was free from stress, with good lighting conditions, a comfortable working height and limited focus of the participant only on intubation and ventilation.…”

“…It has been successfully used in patients with both predicted and unpredicted difficult airways [3, 4]. It has several advantages: it is quick and easy to use, more cost effective than a flexible fiberscope, and is safe in expert hands [5]. …”
