Comparison of the Airtraq and the Macintosh laryngoscope for double-lumen tube intubation

Abstract: There was no significant difference between the Airtraq and the Macintosh laryngoscopes regarding the time needed to insert a double-lumen tube during elective thoracic surgery. Only subtle enhancement of visualisation and a higher incidence of hoarseness were observed in the Airtraq group. The Airtraq device did not result in superior patient safety in this setting.

“…Although videolaryngoscopes improve the laryngeal view and have an easy learning curve, no advantages over Macintosh laryngoscopy in terms of the C-spine motion and intubation procedure time have been observed (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Consistent with these studies, our study revealed that the C-MAC videolaryngoscope has no superiority over Macintosh laryngoscope regarding the C-spine motion.…”

“…The McL blade has been the standard instrument of choice for placing DLTs for several decades. The McL blade displaces a greater volume of soft tissue, and its angle appears to strike the best balance between achieving an adequate direct laryngeal view and providing the necessary space for DLT trajectory control in most airways [11]. The suboptimal visualization with the McL often leads to difficult DLT placement.…”

“…[38,39] Wasem et al [15] reported that the Airtraq videolaryngoscope increased the incidence of hoarseness during DLT intubation. In our study, several maneuvers were utilized to reduce intubation-related complications.…”
