Comparison of the acute-phase response after laparoscopic versus open aortobifemoral bypass surgery: a substudy of a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: PurposeMinimally invasive surgical techniques have been shown to reduce the inflammatory response related to a surgical procedure. The main objective of our study was to measure the inflammatory response in patients undergoing a totally laparoscopic versus open aortobifemoral bypass surgery. This is the first randomized trial on subjects in this population.Patients and methodsThis is a substudy of a larger randomized controlled multicenter trial (Norwegian Laparoscopic Aortic Surgery Trial). Thirty consecutive… Show more

“…However, the value of following trends in [SAA] and [fibrinogen] after exploratory celiotomy has only been reported in small numbers of horses (18 horses [7], 51 horses [8]). In man, [SAA] can be used to compare post-operative outcomes between different surgical procedures [9,10]. Similar findings are reported in horses, where increases in [SAA] occur as early as 12 h after elective surgical procedures [3].…”

“…Studies have profiled changes in cytokine of wild-type patients after laparoscopy, but this has not been well studied in patients with SCA (hemoglobin SS [HbSS]). 911 Laparoscopy may provide additional benefit over open cholecystectomy in patients with SCA by reducing systemic inflammation and mitigating against the enhanced surgical stress response.…”

“…The laboratory values (CRP, TLC, and NLR) that we utilized are accepted as simple, cheap and easily available markers and used to reflect inflammation response by various studies (18,19). Both CRP and NLR are utilized in various malignancies as a prognostic marker as well (14).…”

“…We calculated the delta value of these variables as mentioned in the material method section to overcome this issue. It was claimed that serum CRP levels reflect the APR earlier than the other nonspecific biomarkers like NLR (19) and in our study, we collected the laboratory values before PDT and one day later. This might explain why the difference between groups was statistically significant with respect to CRP and TLC while it was not significant according to NLR.…”
