Comparison of term and preterm labor procalcitonin and leukocyte cell volume, conductivity and light scatter (VCS) parameters in order to demonstrate the impact of inflammation on the triggering mechanisms of preterm uterin contractions

Abstract: Aim: Comparison of mean channels of cell volume, conductivity and light scatter (VCS) parameters of neutrophil, monocyte and lymphocyte, procalcitonin (PCT) and white blood cell count (WBC) during term and preterm labor to evaluate the impact of inflammation on the triggering mechanisms of uterine contractions. Methods: This study is consisted of 16 preterm and 60 term pregnancies at the beginning of the first stages of the labor. Leukocyte VCS parameters, PCT plasma levels and WBC count were evaluated. Result… Show more

“…The production of inflammatory cytokines caused by inflammatory activation is closely related to the maintenance of uterine quiescence and the induction of uterine activation during pregnancy (6,7). The increased production of proinflammatory cytokines is related to uterine activation and the occurrence of PTB, whereas anti-inflammatory cytokines play an essential role in uterine quiescence during gestation (8,9).…”

“…Preterm birth is one of the major factors leading to high rates of neonatal complications 15,16 . In routine practice, most of the preterm newborns are admitted to neonatal intensive care units in order to take necessary precautions and/or to prevent unwanted complications 17,18 . A wide spectrum of neonatal problems due to variations in the gw age at birth and etiological factors behind preterm birth necessitate patient‐specific intensive care protocols.…”

“…Various maternal risk factors (immunological, metabolic, inflammatory, toxic) may cause placental inflammation-related obstetric complications such as preterm birth. 1 2 15 27 Further studies are necessary to understand the relationship between inflammatory processes and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in preterm neonates.…”
