Comparison of Supreme Laryngeal Mask Airway and ProSeal Laryngeal Mask Airway during Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract: Objective: This study compared the safety and efficacy of the Supreme Laryngeal Mask Airway (S-LMA) with that of the ProSeal-LMA (P-LMA) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Material and Methods: Sixty adults were randomly allocated. Following anaesthesia induction, experienced LMA users inserted the airway devices. Results: Oropharyngeal leak pressure was similar in groups (S-LMA, 27.8±2.9 cmH20; P-LMA, 27.0±4.7 cmH 2 0; p=0.42) and did not change during the induction of and throughout pneumoperitoneum. The first a… Show more

“…However, the difference in our study may be of little clinical relevance as the pressures in the both groups were within clinically acceptable range and comparable to oropharyngeal seal pressure seen with various studies using PLMA for airway management in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. “…[10] where the first attempt success rates for the drainage tube insertion were 93% for P-LMA and 100% for S-LMA 100%. If the gastric tube is easily passed, it indirectly confirms correct placement of the supraglottic device.…”

“…Hosten et al . [ 10 ] reported the first attempt success rates of 93% with both S-LMA and P-LMA. Mean airway device insertion time was significantly shorter with S-LMA than with P-LMA (12.5 ± 4.1 s vs. 15.6 ± 6.0 s; P = 0.02) in 60 adults undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.…”

“…Seet et al and Eschertzhuber et al [ 13 , 14 ] reported that the ASP was higher for P-LMA than SLMA. Hosten et al [ 15 ] claimed that the SLMA and P-LMA had similar leak pressure during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, suggesting G-LMA as a suitable airway device in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Direct comparative study will be required to confirm this.…”
