Comparison of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss with Tinnitus and Short-Term Tinnitus

Abstract: Objective. As one of the common symptoms of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSH), tinnitus seriously affects the life and work of SSH patients. The present study is aimed at exploring whether SSH can receive acoustic therapy and the factors that affect the efficacy of SSH acoustic therapy. Methods. A total of 162 patients were outpatients and inpatients, 86 were SSH, and 76 were short-term tinnitus (STT). Both groups received pure tone audiometry, tinnitus matching, and residual inhibition test (RI). The Ti… Show more

“…Based on tinnitus frequency and loudness, the patients were given a narrow-band noise stimulation sound 10 dB louder than tinnitus, which lasted for 1 min, and subjective tinnitus sensation was recorded after stimulation. According to the classification of patients' feelings, the results of the residual inhibition test were divided into three levels: completely positive means that the patient's tinnitus has completely disappeared, partially positive means that the tinnitus loudness or frequency has improved, and negative means that the patient's tinnitus has no change [ 21 ].…”

“…More than 80% of SNHL patients have been found to be accompanied by tinnitus which often lasts for > 6 months ( Diao et al, 2021 ). After treatment, some SNHL can recover from hearing loss, however, the symptom of tinnitus still exists intermittently or continuously ( Qi et al, 2021 ). SNHL is not only affect the structure/function of inner ear (including cochlear hair cells, auditory nerve fibers, and membranous labyrinth) but also induces central system symptoms (such as cognitive deficits, depression, and anxiety) ( Castaneda et al, 2019 ), leading to poor quality of life.…”
