Comparison of Standard Automated Perimetry, Frequency-Doubling Technology Perimetry, and Short-Wavelength Automated Perimetry for Detection of Glaucoma

Abstract: The performance for glaucoma detection was comparable between FDT perimetry and SAP. FDT perimetry had a higher sensitivity for detecting glaucoma than did SWAP at a comparable level of specificity.

These tests aim to target subpopulations of retinal ganglion cells by evaluating specific aspects of visual function, such as motion perception, contrast sensitivity, or color vision (Sample and Weinreb, 1990;Sample et al, 1988), and thereby reduce the ability of the visual system to use other pathways to compensate.…”

“…Short wavelength-automated perimetry (SWAP) has been available since the early 1990s and has been extensively studied. However, recent data have questioned the initial findings that SWAP was more sensitive to early glaucoma damage than SAP 11 12. Longitudinal data regarding the performance of frequency doubling technology (FDT) perimetry are limited.…”

“…57 Although a considerable number of studies have shown that SWAP 8–12 and FDT 10,1216 results can predict the future onset of visual field loss with SAP, other studies have questioned the advantage of these tests over SAP. 1720 …”
