Comparison of spray‐dried egg and albumen powder with conventional animal protein sources as feed ingredients in diets fed to weaned pigs

Abstract: We evaluated the apparent (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in spray-dried egg (SPE) and albumen powder (AP) compared with spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP), dried porcine solubles (DPS) and fish meal (FM). Additionally, the effects of these egg byproducts as a replacement for conventional animal proteins on the performance and nutrient digestibility of piglets were studied. In Exp. 1, six barrows fitted with ileal T-cannulas were allotted to a 6 × 6 Latin Square design and f… Show more

“…Variations observed within each DIAAS dataset can also originate from the conditions in which the intervention diets were provided. Firstly, clear dissimilarities can be noted in starting age/ body weight of the growing pigs, varying from 17.8 ± 1.7 kg (Zhang et al, 2015) to 76.2 ± 5.6 kg (Pedersen, Boersma, & Stein, 2007).…”

“…DPS can promote the growth of intestinal villi and improve the performance of weaned piglets (Gao, Ma, & Ji, ), although recent studies suggest replacement of FM by DPS and fermented soybean meal has no significant effect on the intestinal morphology of weaned piglets (Liu, Wang, & Wang, ). Zhang, Piao, and Ma () showed that DPS can reduce serum diamine oxidase in weaned piglets and maintains the intestinal barrier. The results of the above studies were different from the present study, which may be due to different study subjects and/or substitution ratios.…”
