Comparison of simple and pure shear for an incompressible isotropic hyperelastic material under large deformation

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe concepts of simple and pure shear are well known in continuum mechanics. For small deformations, these states differ only by a rotation. However, correlations between them are not well defined in the case of large deformations. The main goal of this study is to compare these two states of deformation by means of experimental and theoretical approaches. An incompressible isotropic hyperelastic material was used. The experimental procedures were performed using digital image correlation (DIC).… Show more

“…Samples of vulcanized natural rubber, unfilled and filled with 20 phr carbon black (NR0 and NR20), were investigated. The samples have the commonly used so-called "pure-shear geometry" with the dimensions of 80 mm (width) × 10 mm (height) × 1 mm (thickness) [11,14,18]. A bulge on both sides with a diameter of 5 mm enables a defined clamping of the samples.…”

“…The elastic modulus of aluminum alloy plates was 68 GPa and the shear modulus of the adhesive was 0.52 MPa. It is important to remark that the adhesive is characterized by high flexibility and large strains [21,22].…”

“…In the experimental procedure, specimens were tested under monotonic tensile load at constant temperature, and displacement and strain fields were obtained using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. DIC is a powerful tool that has been employed to obtain full-field measurement of specimens under shear load [10,15,16].…”

“…Among all loading conditions, shear is one of the most important modes of deformation in engineering applications. Various methods of inducing a state of in-plane shear, such as the Iosipescu shear test [3e5], V-notched rail shear test [6,7], two-and three-rail shear tests [8,9], simple and pure shear tests [1,2,10], have been developed and implemented for characterization of metallic, polymeric and composite materials.…”
