Comparison of Signaling and Packet Forwarding Overhead for HMIP and MIFA

Abstract: Abstract.Handoff latency affects the service quality of real-time applications. In this paper we develop an analytical model to analyze the Mobile IP Fast Authentication protocol (MIFA) and compare it to Hierarchical Mobile IP (HMIP). The study compares the signaling costs of the protocols as well as the overall load for packet forwarding. Our study shows that MIFA minimizes the packet delivery cost compared to HMIP. Additionally, MIFA is more efficient when the arrival rate of the packets increases. Thus MIFA… Show more

“…But it encounters additional packet processing overhead. [8] reduces the handoff latency without using any additional network elements other than HA and FA. MIFA's basic idea is that the HA delegates the authentication to the FA and there is no requirement of distribution of shared secret between HA and the MN to FA.…”

“…After that various researcher proposed their own protocols considering different point of view such as signaling cost, handoff latency, security, location update cost, packet delivery cost. Multilevel HMIP (MHMIP) [5], Mobile IP fast authentication (MIFA) [6][7] [8], HMIP extension with paging (P-MIP) [9] consider the last two parameters and formulate a mathematical model of the total cost.…”

“…This extension allows the multilevel hierarchies to provide scalability and reduce the handoff latency by minimizing the packet loss. Analysis based on handoff latency shows that Mobile IP Fast Authentication protocol (MIFA) protocol [9] [10] [11] minimizes handoff latency. In addition, it does not use any network element beyond the FA or HA causing reduction of signaling cost.…”
