Comparison of short-term outcomes between laparoscopically-assisted vs. transverse-incision open right hemicolectomy for right-sided colon cancer: a retrospective study

Abstract: LRH and ORHT for right-sided colon cancer resulted in the same short-term surgical outcomes including postoperative bowel function, narcotics consumption and length of hospital stay. However, LRH required a significantly longer operating time.

“…It is important to underscore that after 2004, the open colectomies drastically declined, whereas TL colectomies accounted more than 90% of the total. This probably happened because we were not very sure about the real effectiveness and benefits of LAC compared with the ''open'' approach for right colon surgery [17]. On the contrary, the TL procedure improved patients' comfort and (after standardization of the technique) reduced operative times (Fig.…”

“…Lohsiriwat et al. [14] and Tan et al [17] compared laparoscopy to transverse laparotomy in right hemicolectomies. They could not find a significant difference in parenteral analgesia requirement, bowel recovery, dietary improvements, length of hospital stay, and 30-day morbidity, implying there is no shortterm postoperative benefit of laparoscopy over a transverse incision.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] Nevertheless, some reports comparing laparoscopic to open right colonic resections for cancer have provided conflicting results. 11,12 The main reason for this could be the diversity of procedures including right hemi-and extended right hemicolectomy, transverse colectomy, and variable and complex regional anatomy on the right side.…”
