“…Our finding that fertilizer N source had no significant effect on grain yield parallels what has been reported in previous comparisons involving strictly ammoniacal (Fox et al., 1986; Gagnon & Ziadi, 2010; Muirhead et al., 1985; Nelson & MacGregor, 1973; Pfarr et al., 2020; Touchton & Hargrove, 1982; Zhang et al., 1993) or NO 3 − (Barber et al., 1992; Frye, 1977; Khalifa & Zidan, 2001; Smiciklas & Below, 1992; Suwanarit et al., 1996a) sources as well as mixed N fertilizers (Bandel et al., 1980; Biswas & Ma, 2016; Eckert et al., 1986; Fox & Hoffman, 1981; Mengel et al., 1982). There is, however, evidence of greater fertilizer N response for NO 3 − than ammoniacal sources (Abbasi et al., 2013; Absalan et al., 2011; Biswas & Ma, 2016; Gagnon & Ziadi, 2010; Khalifa & Zidan, 2001; Touchton & Hargrove, 1982) as well as higher yields that can occur when NH 4 NO 3 is compared to UAN (Andraski & Bundy, 2008; Bandel et al., 1980; Fox & Hoffman, 1981; Fox et al., 1986).…”
