Comparison of selected indicators of farms in the EU member states

Abstract: The following international comparison of selected indicators of farms stems from the official results of investigations on holdings incorporated in the "Farm Accountancy Data Network" (FADN) and it is based on the standard outputs recalculated for the average agricultural holding in each Member State. The paper accepts the mandatory concept that defines the basic indicators serving to illustrate the creation and division of income from farming in the FADN system. The presentation of the results develops from … Show more

“…In the countries that have been members of the community for the longest time, thanks to consistent implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy, the agriculture sector has made considerable progress in the area of technology and mechanisation, the consequence of which has been a large increase in production and workforce productivity in agriculture (Chmielewska, 2008). In member states that have been a part of the Union since 2004 or acceded at a later date, the situation of agriculture and the rural areas is completely different than in other EU countries (Kijek et al, 2015;Bašek and Kraus, 2011;Terluin, 2003). In her studies, Chmielewska (2008) argues that following each extension of the Union the regional diversification of the fundamental production and social indicators in the agriculture sector and in rural areas deepened.…”

“…The SGM expressed the economic yield of a production unit for the individual sections of plant and animal production. Its value corresponds to the standard of production of 1 ha of the crop or the head of a particular animal species after deducting variable costs for its production (Bašek and Kraus 2011). The standard gross margin thus determines the economic gain of a production plant or animal (Divila and Sokol 1999).…”

“…There follows the Czech Republic, where the average is 227.8 ha and 131.6 ha in Estonia. According to Bašek and Kraus (2011), this means that the processes of restitution, restructuring and privatization have brought major changes in the participation of the private land ownership in these countries. The analysis also shows that the UK has about twice the average area of farms than the average in the EU (160 ha). There is also a reduced UAA in the Mediterranean countries which can be about half the EU average, like in Spain (35 ha), about three times lower, as is the case of Portugal (26 ha), or even 10 times lower than the European average, as is the case of Greece (7.1 ha).…”

“…A MBP expressa o rendimento econômico de uma unidade de produção para as seções individuais de produção vegetal e animal. O seu valor corresponde ao valor padrão de produção de 1 ha da cultura ou uma cabeça de uma determinada espécie animal após a dedução dos custos variáveis (específicos) para a sua produção (BAšEk;kRAUS, 2011). A margem bruta padrão determina assim o ganho econômico de uma unidade de produção vegetal ou animal (DIVILA;SOKOL, 1999).…”
