Comparison of satellite‐derived UV irradiances with ground‐based measurements at four European stations

Abstract: [1] Satellite-derived ultraviolet (UV) irradiances may form the basis for establishing a global UV climatology, provided that their accuracy is confirmed against ground-based measurements of known quality. In this study, quality-checked spectral UV irradiance measurements from four European stations (Sodankyla, Finland; Bilthoven, Netherlands; Ispra, Italy; and Thessaloniki, Greece) are compared with those derived from TOMS, based on the (version 8) data set. The aim of this study is to validate the TOMS UV ir… Show more

“…Satellite ozone and UV data were exhaustively validated by means of GB measurements, regarding TOMS; (Kalliskota et al, 2000;McKenzie et al, 2001;Krotkov et al, 2001;Fioletov et al, 2002;Meloni et al, 2005;Arola et al, 2005;Kazantzidis et al, 2006) and lately OMI; Ialongo et al, 2008;Weihs et al, 2008;Kazadzis et al, 2009;Buchard et al, 2008). “…Therefore, satellite derived products need to be validated with ground-based measurements. Previous comparisons between satellite surface UV data provided by TOMS and ground-based measurements have been extensively done (Kalliskota et al, 2000;McKenzie et al, 2001;Cede et al, 2004;Arola et al, 2005;Kazantzidis et al, Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union.…”

“…Many studies have demonstrated the ability (and limitations) of spaceborne measurements to assess the groundlevel UV radiation (Eck et al, 1995;Herman et al, 1999;Kalliskota et al, 2000;Matthijsen et al, 2000;Krotkov et al, 2001;Kazantzidis et al, 2006;Arola et al, 2009;Kazadzis et al, 2009). Cloud effects for summer periods derived from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (IS-CCP) data -cloud fraction and optical depth -perform a little worse than derived from the reflectivity (Matthijsen et al, 2000;Williams et al, 2004).…”
