Comparison of reproductive performance of Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from three Indian rivers

Abstract: A study was conducted to compare the reproductive performance of Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from three different rivers viz., Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, Godavari in Maharashtra and Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Twenty pairs of brooders from each location were randomly selected and induced with pituitary extract (P) and ovaprim (O). Reproductive performance in terms of stripping percentage, pseudo gonado-somatic index, spawning, fecundity, fertilisation rate, hatching rate, and survival rate as w… Show more

“…The present study is in accordance with the observations on total fecundity of previous works, which was found to be 7706 eggs for the F130 female group. The total fecundity of C. batrachus broodstock in other studies was reported to be significantly lower than in the present study (Charan et al, 2016;Dhara & Saha, 2013;Sheikh et al, 2018;Srivastava et al, 2012), which might be related broodstock management. The present study also revealed that the decreasing level of relative fecundity correlated with the increasing body weight.…”

“…In parallel with our finding, previous literature [ 4 , 36 ] documented that the broodstock fecundity was not greatly affected by various environmental conditions. Nevertheless, an opposite outcome was also noted in Clarias batrachus [ 24 ] and Setipinna phasa [ 25 ]. The wild and captive fish oocytes’ weight and ripeness were demonstrated to be significantly different.…”

“…Many studies exist on the comparative analysis of wild and captive broodstock reproductive performance [ 10 , 24 , 25 ], biochemical composition [ 10 , 26 30 ], amino acid profile [ 26 , 28 ], and ovarian histological investigation [ 4 , 10 ] in different species of fish. However, there is a lack of comparative analysis of reproductive development and tissue biochemical composition in the wild and captive S. aor female broodstock.…”
