Comparison of repeatability of swept-source and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography for measuring inner retinal thickness in retinal disease

Abstract: PurposeTo compare repeatability between SS-OCT and SD-OCT for measurement of macular, macular retinal nerve fiber (mRNFL), and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness in various retinal diseases.MethodsOne hundred and fourteen eyes of 114 subjects were investigated. Seventy-eight eyes with retinal disease and 36 normal eyes underwent two consecutive measurements of macular, mRNFL, and GC-IPL thickness using SS-OCT and SD-OCT. The data were obtained using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy … Show more

“…The thickness at one to seven grids of six macular neuroretinal layers and RPE in patients without diabetic neuropathy was significantly thinner than those in controls. However, the influence of diabetes on the thickness of the macular neuroretinal layers had not been consistent (8,29), because OCT image quality depends on the instrument reliability and measurement variability (30). SS-OCT uses 1 µ wavelength light source, allowing deeper penetration into the photoreceptors and RPE (31).…”

“…Measurements of thickness (central macular, superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal quadrants) were recorded for each participant using MS Excel (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, USA). Because the repeatability of SDOCT is reportedly high, with an interclass correlation coefficient of 0.9–1.0, 9 a single SDOCT examination was performed for each participant. The retinal thickness difference index (TDI) was also determined; this parameter is determined by subtracting foveal thickness from the thicknesses of other macular sectors (for example, TDI of superior macula = superior macular thickness – foveal thickness).…”

“…An accurate evaluation of the corneal endothelial layer is a critical step for appropriate clinical assessment and patient management. 9,12,15,16 Although the Konan-Noncon Robo SP-6000 and the Tomey EM-3000 SMs are widely used in clinical practice, there is a paucity of data regarding the interchangeability of the two devices. Our data show that the Konan-Noncon Robo SP-6000 and the Tomey EM-3000 are highly comparable when using the manual center technique and the manual L-count method analysis, respectively, with a mean ECD difference of only 12.4 cells/mm 2 , a mean ECD absolute difference of 93.3 cells/ mm 2 , and low 95% LoA.…”
