The contamination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) in soils, plants, and terrestrial fauna from a former pesticide-producing area in Southwest China was investigated. High levels of OCP residues (RHCHs and RDDTs of 3.89-13,386 and 23.3-11,186 ng g -1 dw, respectively) were found in the soils within the producing factory, indicating that the former pesticide factory brownfield site poses a high environment risk and that effective soil remediation is needed. The OCP concentrations in soils surrounding the pesticide factory were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than in the other agricultural areas from China. Grass, vegetables, and tree leaves from the surrounding areas of the point source showed moderate OCP pollution, which was likely to be causing potential negative impacts on terrestrial ecosystem. OCP levels in terrestrial species from the studied area including insects, free-range chickens and birds were moderate, and were generally within accepted safe levels.b-HCH was the most prevalent isomer, implying that hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) residues were mainly derived from the degradation of technical HCH. The dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) profiles reflected obvious degradation of technical DDT. In the study area, the concentrations of HCBD were \0.02-5.59, 0.03-24.6 ng g -1 dw and 1.65-3.80 ng g -1 lw in soils, plants, and animals, respectively, which were relatively low and not sufficient to cause observable adverse biological effects.

The biodegradability of chlorinated methanes, chlorinated ethanes, chlorinated ethenes, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), chlorinated acetic acids, chlorinated propanoids and chlorinated butadienes was evaluated based on literature data. Evidence for the biodegradation of compounds in all of the compound categories evaluated has been reported. A broad range of chlorinated aliphatic structures are susceptible to biodegradation under a variety of physiological and redox conditions. Microbial biodegradation of a wide variety of chlorinated aliphatic compounds was shown to occur under five physiological conditions. However, any given physiological condition could only act upon a subset of the chlorinated compounds. Firstly, chlorinated compounds are used as an electron donor and carbon source under aerobic conditions. Secondly, chlorinated compounds are cometabolized under aerobic conditions while the microorganisms are growing (or otherwise already have grown) on another primary substrate. Thirdly, chlorinated compounds are also degraded under anaerobic conditions in which they are utilized as an electron donor and carbon source. Fourthly, chlorinated compounds can serve as an electron acceptor to support respiration of anaerobic microorganisms utilizing simple electron donating substrates. Lastly chlorinated compounds are subject to anaerobic cometabolism becoming biotransformed while the microorganisms grow on other primary substrate or electron acceptor. The literature survey demonstrates that, in many cases, chlorinated compounds are completely mineralised to benign end products. Additionally, biodegradation can occur rapidly. Growth rates exceeding 1 d )1 were observed for many compounds. Most compound categories include chlorinated structures that are used to support microbial growth. Growth can be due to the use of the chlorinated compound as an electron donor or alternatively to the use of the chlorinated compound as an electron acceptor (halorespiration). Biodegradation linked to growth is important, since under such conditions, rates of degradation will increase as the microbial population (biocatalyst) increases. Combinations of redox conditions are favorable for the biodegradation of highly chlorinated structures that are recalcitrant to degradation under aerobic conditions. However, under anaerobic conditions, highly chlorinated structures are partially dehalogenated to lower chlorinated counterparts. The microbial reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents is a redox reaction in which the chlorinated carbon receives electrons from a suitable electron donor. Hexachloro-1,3-butadiene (HCBD) is a particularly recalcitrant chlorinated solvent. Its slow, cyanocobalamin-dependent biochemical dechlorination by mixed microbial consortia had been previously demonstrated. This study shows that the reductive dechlorination reaction of HCBD can be monitored in situ by recording the redox potential (E Ag/AgCl ). The addition of HCBD to mixed anaerobic consortia triggered a rise of E Ag/AgCl and the formation of dechlorinated endproducts. This indicated that the change in E Ag/AgCl was linked to the dechlorination of HCBD. Total concentration of dechlorinated endproducts (C4 gases) equated to approximately 50% of HCBD added. The rise and subsequent fall in E Ag/AgCl after the addition of HCBD caused a peak. Peak areas obtained, from the change in E Ag/AgCl , provided an indication of the amount of HCBD dechlorinated. Moreover, the saturation concentration of HCBD can be estimated from peak heights. This online monitoring of HCBD reductive dechlorination could potentially be used for improved process control of bioremediation reactors and on-site as online biosensors. Online monitoring of HCBD dechlorination via redox potential offers both reliability and portability at a low cost. In addition, this novel and innovative technique could potentially be used to monitor the dechlorination of contaminants other than HCBD.
