Comparison of Quality of Life and Learning Success of Adolescents Surviving Cancer and Their Classmates

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life and school success of adolescent survivors and their classmates. A survey was conducted among 21 cancer survived 12-18-year-old children and 95 of their classmates by using questionnaires covering (a) characteristics of the quality of life; (b) characteristics of the learning process; and (c) level of the fear of cancer recurrence. “…Poor connectedness to school is a predictor of future poor psychosocial adjustment including attention, internalizing, and externalizing problems (Okado et al, 2018). Learning achievement is also greatly inluenced by social domains like isolation and connection (Molnar et al, 2020). Finally, resiliency has been shown to be associated with more positive relationships with friends (Kim & Yoo, 2010).…”

“…Second, while fear extinction learning offers insight into treating anxiety and PTS, it also provides a robust and highly reproducible model for studying perturbations in general learning behaviors, through readily available assays for assessing memory acquisition, recall, extinction, and expression. Recent work highlights ‘fear of cancer recurrence’ in adolescent cancer survivors as one of many social and physical variables influencing learning achievement and overall quality of life (Molnar et al, 2019). This model system provides a framework for exploring chemotherapy or radiation-induced shifts in typical learning trajectories and can offer insight into both psychopathology and learning in general.…”
