Abstract. This study was conducted to reveal the effect of watercress oil on skin burns in rabbits. Twenty-four male rabbits were used in this study and divided into eight groups. Four groups were burned by concentrated hydrochloric acid and the others by a hot glass rod (80°C) for three times. These groups were divided into two controls: two treated by the antibiotic Baneocin (Bacitracin zinc 250 IU and Neomycin 5000 IU); two treated by watercress oil and two treated by watercress and Nigella sativa oils, 1:1). The epithilialization, the contracting ability of wounds, the closure time and the time necessary for hair to grow were recorded in all groups. A histological examination was processed to test the peripheries of wounds; their thickness, their growth, the hair follicle repairing and the inflammatory cell response. Watercress acted as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and initiated the epithelialization from the peripheries of the wounds. The contracting ability and closure time in both antibiotic and watercress groups were significantly different from those of controls. It was concluded that watercress oil could be an effective therapy in healing skin burns in rabbits, whatever the cause of the burn may be. However, watercress oil and Nigella sativa oils (1:1) had no effect on healing these types of burns under these circumstances.

RESUMO:Própolis é uma mistura complexa, formada por material resinoso e balsâmico. Sua composição química é complexa e variada, estando relacionada com a fl ora de cada região visitada pelas abelhas e com o período de coleta da resina. Inclui fl avonóides, ácidos aromáticos, terpenóides e fenilpropanóides, ácidos graxos e vários outros compostos. A própolis tem sido objeto de intensos estudos farmacológicos e químicos nos últimos 30 anos. Em várias partes do mundo é indicada para melhorar a saúde e prevenir doenças. Atualmente, é disponível em várias formas farmacêuticas como cápsulas, extratos, enxaguatório bucal, na forma de pó, entre outras. Ainda são necessários estudos correlacionando a composição química com a atividade biológica, defi nindo cada tipo de própolis com a sua aplicação terapêutica. É uma tarefa imprescindível para um mercado cada vez maior e exigente em todo o mundo.Unitermos: Própolis, constituintes químicos, atividade biológica.ABSTRACT: "Propolis: updates on chemistry and pharmacology". Propolis (bee glue) is a complex mixture, formed by resinous and balsamic material. Its chemical composition is variable and complex, being related with the fl ora of each region visited by the bees and with the period of resins collection. Flavonoids, aromatic acids, terpenoids and phenylpropanoids, fatty acids, and other compounds are found in propolis. In the last 30 years, propolis has become subject of intense pharmacological and chemical studies. In different parts of the world it is indicated to improve health and prevent illnesses. Currently, it is available in some pharmaceutical forms as capsules, extracts, mouthrinses, powder form, among others. Indeed, studies correlating the chemical composition with the biological activity are necessary, defi ning each type of propolis with its therapeutic application. It is an essential task for a market ever bigger and demanding in the whole word.

Própolis é uma denominação genérica utilizada para descrever uma mistura complexa de substâncias resinosas, gomosas e balsâmicas colhidas por abelhas melíferas de brotos, flores e exsudatos de plantas, às quais as abelhas acrescentam secreções salivares, cera e pólen para a elaboração do produto final [15]. Seu emprego na vida da colônia está relacionado com suas propriedades mecânicas, sendo utilizada na construção e adaptação da colméia, e antimicrobianas, garantindo um ambiente asséptico [24].Os primeiros registros da utilização da própolis pelo homem remontam ao Egito antigo e à Mesopotâmia [16,44,52]. Desde a década de 1980, este produto vem sendo largamente utilizado em suplementos alimentares e beberagens, como preventivo de enfermidades [12] e em aplicações tópicas [6,19,27,35]. Paralelamente, nota-se um incremento de estudos a partir deste produto, desta- RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho é contribuir para o estabelecimento de rotinas que facilitem o controle de qualidade de própolis, incluindo a identificação de sua(s) fonte(s) botânica(s). Para tanto, traz análises preconizadas pelo Ministério da Agricultura (exame organoléptico, perda por dessecação a 105ºC, teores de cinza e de cera, resíduo insolúvel em metanol, resíduo seco e teores de flavonóides e fenóis totais) e análises cromatográficas (CLAE) comparativas entre própolis e sua suposta fonte vegetal. Os resultados permitiram observar que, excetuando-se perda por dessecação a 105ºC, todos os demais parâmetros estiveram dentro dos limites estabelecidos pelo Ministério da Agricultura, e a própolis estudada provavelmente foi elaborada a partir da espécie Baccharis dracunculifolia DC, proveniente da Serra do Japi-SP/Brasil. Foram identificados os ácidos clorogênico, cafeico, para-cumárico, ferúlico, trans-cinâmico e artepillin C (ácido 3,5-diprenil-4-hidroxicinâmico) e os flavonóides isossacuranetina e canferida, em ambos, própolis e planta. The goal of this work is to contribute in establishing routines for the quality control of propolis, including the identification of its botanical source(s). For this reason, we present an analysis in accordance with the Brazilian Agricultural Ministry recommendations (organoleptic evaluation, loss on drying at 105ºC, determinations of extractable and non-extractable matter and determinations of ash, wax, flavonoids and total phenolic contents) and comparative chromatographic analysis (HPLC) between propolis and its expected vegetal source. With the exception of the "drying loss test at 105ºC", all the parameters were within the limits established by the Ministry of Agricultural to guarantee the identity and quality of propolis. Abstract: Propolis skin cream appears to have a beneficial effects on the healing of partial thickness burn wounds. If dressings had been changed more frequent the antimicrobial and wound healing effects would have been enhanced.
