Comparison of Pre and Post-operative Hearing Results in Canal Wall Down Mastoidectomy with Type III Tympanoplasty

Abstract: This study was done to compare the pre and post-operative hearing results in patients undergoingcanal wall down mastoidectomy with classical type III tympanoplasty using temporalis fasciaalone.Patients of ≥5 years age with the diagnosis of Chronic otitis media (squamous) with conductive ormixed hearing loss, needing canal wall down mastoidectomy and with intact and mobile stapessuprastructure at surgery who underwent classical type III tympanoplasty were included in thestudy. The pre and post-operative PTA was… Show more

“…Shrestha et al, [7] and Cheang and Cho [28] reported ABG closure of 73.7% and 61% within 0-30 db in type III tympanoplasty, while Moustafa and Khalifa [29] observed hearing results of simple myringostapediopexy technique in 145 cases and showed that only 10% of these cases achieved PTA-ABG closure of less than 30 dB.…”

“…Th e audiometry results were reported according to American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery guidelines, except for thresholds at 3 kHz, which were substituted in all cases with thresholds at 4 kHz. [7] Th e results reported are short-term hearing results only because the long-term success of any ossicular repair is largely dependent on factors outside the control of surgeon such as patient follow-up rates, Eustachian tube function, middle ear stability, and the condition of mucosa. Th e short-term results are, hence, a more accurate refl ection of actual reconstructive procedures.…”

“…But an average hearing loss of 1.5 dB was seen, which could be because of displacement of graft in Group-B. [13] Shrestha, et al [14] noticed a net gain of 8.0 dB in patients undergoing CWD mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty, which was also in accordance with our study where a net gain of 6.61 dB was noticed at 10 weeks and a gain of 6.09 dB at 6 months in Group-C (CWD mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty).…”

“…Shrestha et al [23] concluded that type III tympanoplasty though showed varied hearing improvement results in significant improvement in PTA-ABG (range 15-61.2 dB). In their study, mean pre and postoperative ABG was 37.8 dB and 29.8 dB.…”
