Comparison of polyamine, phenol and flavonoid contents in plants grown under conventional and organic methods

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare the contents of polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine), and total soluble phenols and flavonoids in parts of plants grown under either organic or conventional cropping, commonly discarded during food preparation. The contents of free polyamines, total phenols and total soluble flavonoids in peels (zucchini squash, banana, potato, eggplant, orange, lime, mango, passion fruit and radish), leaves (zucchini squash, broccoli, carrot, collard, cassava, radish and g… Show more

“…A similar, although non-significant, trend was observed for soluble polyphenols and soluble and hydrolysable flavonoids: their content was higher in organic versus conventional eggplant (Table 2). Lima et al (2008) and Raigón et al (2010) also reported greater polyphenols and flavonoids content in organic eggplant. Raigón et al (2010) concluded that polyphenols and flavonoids content is lower in conventionally grown eggplant due to higher levels of fertilization, especially nitrogen, which results in phenolic content reduction.…”

“…Polyamines were determined by thin layer chromatography following the method described by Flores and Galston (1982), and adapted by Lima et al (2008). Fresh material of sepals, petals, stems and bracts (50 mg) were homogenized for 1 min in 5% (v/v) cold perchloric acid (Merck), using a food homogenizer.…”
