Comparison of physical activity energy expenditure in Japanese adolescents assessed by EW4800P triaxial accelerometry and the doubly labelled water method

Abstract: The present study compared the accuracy of triaxial accelerometry and the doubly labelled water (DLW) method for measuring physical activity (PA) in Japanese adolescents. A total of sixty adolescents aged 12-15 years were analysed. The total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured over 7 d by the DLW method and with an EW4800P triaxial accelerometer (Panasonic Corporation). The measured (RMR m ) and predicted RMR (RMR p ) were 5·7 (SD 0·9) and 6·0 (SD 1·0) MJ/d, respectively. TEE measured by the DLW method and a… Show more

“…The present study reports a PAL for wrestlers of 2.5860.34, 2.4760.42 and 2.7360.06 (mean, light and middle weight class, respectively) during a training period. This is higher than that reported for Japanese adolescents in general (1.9760.31 in subjects who exercised, and 1.8560.27 in subjects who did not exercise) (36). This result suggests that the physical activity of collegiate wrestlers during the winter training season is classified as high physical activity when it is compared with previous studies (30).…”

“…Therefore, the underrepresentation of developing countries and the lack of published results from Asia has to be underlined. Although there are several studies in the literature on PA evaluated with accelerometry in Asian children and adolescents, these studies employed different accelerometers (e.g., [84,85]) and/or different cutoff points (e.g., [84][85][86]).…”

“…Doubly labeled water (DLW) is the most accurate TEE estimation method under free-living conditions [ 6 , 7 ], but it is expensive and requires specialized analysis equipment [ 8 ], making large-scale data collection difficult. The Japan-DRI refers to only 2 reports of DLW data from Japanese children [ 9 , 10 ]. Consequently, the EER of Japanese children is determined based on other nationalities.…”
