Abstract. A fundamental goal in ecology is to understand distribution and abundance of species.Peripheral populations inhabiting the trailing-edge of a species' distribution may carry considerable ecological and evolutionary value yet being most threatened under predicted climate change scenarios. However, the nature of species distributional limits and the ecological and genetic implications of living at low latitude rear edges remain unclear. The assumption that population abundance declines towards range edges, where environmental selective pressure increases, is the basis of a wide range of ecological and evolutionary predictions. Empirical data have provided contrasting evidence about the consequences of living at low latitude distributional limits, raising concerns regarding their generality and highlighting the need for combined multidisciplinary tests. Here, we provide a long-term, comprehensive evaluation of latitudinal patterns in genetic diversity, demographic, morphological and life history traits in the marine macroalga Fucus guiryi.The center to edge transition was mirrored by increasing water and air temperature gradients, with sea surface temperature of coldest months being the most relevant influence on F. guiryi traits. Overall, we identified a strong correlation between ecological data, collected over one year at bimonthly intervals, and distance to the range center. We found decreasing population and individual size towards distributional margins. Similarly, reproductive capacity, threshold size for reproduction, density of reproductive population and recruitment rates showed a core to edge reduction. Temporal variability of individual reproductive effort and recruitment rates did not conform to the general pattern. In contrast, population genetic data did not show a core-edge gradient, as gene diversity and allelic richness were not significantly lower at edge populations, contradicting predictions of higher drift and bottlenecks for smaller edge populations.The contrasting support provided by genetic and ecological data highlights the need to combine multiple and cross-disciplinary evidence for a comprehensive understanding of ecological and evolutionary mechanisms linked to species ranges.

Life-history trait of the Mediterranean keystone species Patella rustica: growth and microbial bioerosion

The age and shell growth patterns in populations of Patella rustica in the Adriatic Sea were determined by analyzing the inner growth lines visible in shell sections. Marginal increment analysis showed annual periodicity with the annual growth line being deposited in May. The growth analysis of 120 individual shells showed that 90.8 % of collected shells were less than 4 years of age and only two shells (1.6 %) were older than 6 years. Population structure was described and generalized von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated: asymptotic length (L ∞ ) was 38.22 mm and the growth constant (K) was 0.30 year -1 . Growth performance index value of P. rustica (Ø') was 2.64, among the lowest ranges reported for limpet species. Patella rustica shells were degraded to different degrees by microbial bioerosion. The damage was most often restricted to the oldest parts of the shell, i.e. apex of the shell, posing difficulties in determining the exact position of the first growth line. The microboring organisms identified were pseudofilamentous and filamentous cyanobacteria Hormathonema (Solentia) paulocellulare, Hyella caespitosa, Mastigocoleus testarum and Leptolyngbya sp. The overall intensity of infestation was relatively low, but increased in severity with shell age and length. The present study is first to introduce the use of inner growth lines in Patella rustica shell sections as a reliable method for age determination. It provides the first insight into the growth patterns of this keystone species, while taking the interference by microbial shell bioerosion in consideration.

Aim To improve our understanding of how parasitism interacts with geographical range expansions by quantifying diversity and abundance of parasites in 25 populations of a large marine snail, Kellet's whelk (Kelletia kelletii), throughout its historical and recently expanded range, which are separated by a well‐known biogeographical boundary. Location California coast (western North America). Methods Parasitological examinations were conducted on 199 whelks from 25 subtidal reefs throughout its expanded and historical ranges. We calculated infection risk, parasite intensity, and parasite species diversity. Abiotic (temperature, latitude, distance from range limit) and biotic (host density) variables were analysed as potential drivers of differential parasitism between expanded‐ and historical‐range populations. Results Compared with historical‐range whelks, expanded‐range whelks were 20% as likely to be infected by parasites, and those that were infected had 6% the number of individual parasites. On average, expanded‐range whelks had 14% the number of parasite species than the historical‐range whelks. The marked decrease in species richness of parasites infecting expanded‐range whelks was only partly explained by the low numbers of parasites. The reduced parasite abundance and diversity in the expanded‐range whelks was not explained by the examined abiotic factors or by whelk density. Main conclusions Expanded‐range populations of Kellet's whelk experience substantially lower parasite abundance and diversity than the historical‐range populations, despite relatively poor demographic performance. The reduced parasitism observed resembles the enemy escape typically characterizing invasive species. A possible explanation for the observed ‘parasite escape’ is that the biogeographical boundary limits the movements or drives the low abundance of other host species (elasmobranchs) required to complete the life cycles of the ‘missing’ parasites. We suggest that parasite escape may generally characterize range‐margin expansions and be important in permitting expansions into what may otherwise be marginal habitats. This parasite escape may directly counter the spread of infectious diseases associated with global warming‐induced range shifts.
