Comparison of periodontal parameters between patients with ischemic and dilative cardiomyopathy

Abstract: Background This cross-sectional study aimed in the comparison of periodontal parameters, number of remaining teeth and oral behaviour between patients with ischemic- (ICM) and non-ischemic dilative cardiomyopathy (DCM). Methods Patients with HF from the Department for Cardiac Surgery at the Heart Center Leipzig were included. “…However, this high prevalence might blur the potential of periodontal disease as a risk indicator because only a minority of patients were periodontally healthy or mildly diseased, respectively. To circumvent this condition, the current study also considered the PISA, similar to a previous study comparing patients with severe HF with an underlying ICM or DCM [31]. The PISA allows for the quantification of periodontal inflammation as a sum of inflamed periodontal pockets [32].…”

“…The current epidemiology had defined that periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease have a moderate association and the mechanism of this link had not been clarified [13,14]. Severe heart failure (HF) can increase the burden of periodontal disease [15]. Some scholars found that common periodontal pathogens can be tested in atherosclerosis specimens [8,16].…”

“…Standardized questionnaires about oral health behavior and periodontal symptoms were used as established in various previous studies by this working group. [34][35][36] All athletes were asked to complete them self-administered on-site. Questions were asked about dentist visits (control or complaint-oriented check-ups, regular professional teeth cleaning), the importance of oral health, oral hygiene behavior (frequency of toothbrushing, interdental hygiene, use of fluoride gels), and received instructions about oral hygiene.…”
