Comparison of patient survival and technique survival between continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and automated peritoneal dialysis

Abstract: Background: This retrospective cohort study compared patient survival and technique survival between patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) using recent data at a single tertiary medical center in Taiwan. Methods: From medical records, we identified incident 459 CAPD patients and 266 APD patients on dialysis for at least 90 days and aged more than 18 years to estimate mortality and technique failure rates, and related hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confi… Show more

“…These findings might reflect greater cumulative PD experience, PD specialization or availability of a variety of clinical competence and experience (nurses, social workers, dietitians, surgeons and physicians). Other factors, such as adequate nutritional status 72 , use of automated PD 73 and use of assisted PD 74 , have been associated with improved PD technique survival; this association was especially significant in paediatric age groups.…”

“…Dahlerus et al (2016) indicated that when patients with advanced kidney disease choose between PD and haemodialysis, the main considerations were keeping as much independence as possible, quality and quantity of life, and flexibility in daily schedule. Comparing to haemodialysis, PD provides greater convenience, higher quality of life, better physical health, better survival rate, milder dialysisrelated symptoms and lower risk of peritonitis (Tang et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2020;Yang et al, 2018).…”

“…An earlier study from our center revealed that icodextrin use was associated with lower risks of both technique and death [ 16 ]. A recent study also from our center demonstrated that APD is associated a lower risk of technique failure than CAPD [ 17 ]. Thus, the use of icodextrin or APD was considered as a covariate in data analysis.…”
