Comparison of OxidativeDNADamage Between Alcohol‐Dependent Patients With and Without Delirium Tremens

Abstract: Alcohol-dependent patients with DTs have higher serum 8-OHdG levels than those without DTs, suggesting that higher oxidative stress carries a greater risk of the occurrence of DTs.

“…Details of the search results are presented in eFigure 1 in the Supplement. We identified 82 studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria, comprising 205 patient vs control group comparisons and a total of 10 151 patient and 10 532 control observations. Seven studies had interventions, comprising a total of 15 preintervention-postintervention comparisons.…”

“…They reported that the oxidative DNA damage persisted after 1 week of detoxification and that the alcohol withdrawal severity was correlated with the increase in oxidative stress, particularly the 8-OHdG levels [ 59 ]. In a later study, the authors investigated oxidative DNA damage between AD patients with and without delirium tremens, using 8-OHdG as a biomarker in AD patients with and without delirium tremens and reported that AD patients with delirium tremens have higher serum 8-OHdG levels than those without delirium tremens, suggesting that higher oxidative stress carries a greater risk of the occurrence of delirium tremens [ 60 ].…”

“…GSH functions as an important antioxidant barrier in the lung tissues in protection of cells against damage caused by oxidants. The 8-OHdG is a sensitive biomarker [43, 44] that is often used to evaluate DNA damage caused by ROS. 4-HNE, which is a product of oxidative damage, is a marker of lipid peroxidation [45, 46].…”
