Comparison of Optimal Hedging Policies for Hydropower Reservoir System Operation

Abstract: Reservoir operation rules play an important role in regions economic development. Meanwhile, hedging policies are mostly applied for municipal, industrial, and irrigation water supplies from reservoirs and it is less used for reservoir operation for hydropower generation. The concept of hedging and rationing factors can be used to maintain the water in a reservoir for the sake of increasing water storage and water head for future use. However, water storage and head are the key factors in operation of reservoi… Show more

“…In general, several studies (Neelakantan and Sasireka 2013;Sasireka and Neelakantan 2016;Jin and Lee 2019;Tayebiyan et al 2016Tayebiyan et al , 2019Felfelani et al 2013;Chong et al 2021) have used various hedging rules to operate hydropower reservoirs. However, these studies applied the concept of water rationing practice that uses the constant hedging factors at the current time without envisaging the future water use and demand.…”

“…However, building an additional new reservoir project is now much more complicated than in the past. Therefore, the optimization of the beneficial usage of current reservoirs is becoming more relevant [12][13][14].…”

“…To minimize the impact of drought and the consequent shortages in current and future water supply, the hedging rules are used to balance the shortage in water supply with the storage target [7,8]. As the relationship between the damage and the shortage is nonlinear, by reducing the supply of reservoir when supply capacity is small [9], HR can store some water in the reservoir for future usage and reduce the possibility of large shortage damage from water shortage in future [10][11][12]. HR and SOP are shown in Figure 1.…”
