Comparison of Open and Laparoscopic Live Donor Nephrectomy

Abstract: Laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy can be performed with morbidity and mortality comparable to open donor nephrectomy, with substantial improvements in patient recovery after the laparoscopic approach. Initial graft survival and function rates are equal to those of open donor nephrectomy, but longer follow-up is necessary to confirm these observations.

“…In this work, the use of laparoscopic surgery to remove the lithiasis was preferred considering the better results in relation to the conventional surgery, mainly the ones related to the postoperative period (Monson et al, 1995;Flowers et al, 1997;Liem et al, 1997).…”

“…The use of LDN may remove some of the disincentives of living donor transplantation, increasing the pool of kidneys available for transplantation with an increase of voluntary kidney donors (3). Some of the advantages of the LDN include less donor morbidity, lower hospital stay, and better convalescence, with similar short and long term outcomes when compared to open surgery (4)(5)(6)(7)(8).…”

“…2 Some centres report a com-892 CANADIAN JOURNAL OF ANESTHESIA L parable morbidity and mortality of both approaches. 3 At the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, this case was the first in a series of 38 laparoscopic donor nephrectomies since 2000 which had to be converted to an open procedure. At this time, however, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy is a new and evolving technique, and it cannot be decided yet whether it is a viable alternative to the open live donor nephrectomy.…”
