Comparison of negative pressure wound therapy and secondary intention healing after excision of acral lentiginous melanoma on the foot

Abstract: These results show that, despite the drawback of rather prolonged healing time, NPWT is an excellent therapeutic option for wounds after wide excision of melanoma on the foot, with acceptable functional and cosmetic outcomes.

“…and TGF-β promoting nerve repair has been confirmed recently [15][16][17][18]. (3) VSD can reduce the local inflammation, relieve local hyperemia and edema [4,19], which are beneficial for nerve stabilizing within the surrounding environment and for nerve regeneration [20]. In this experiment, nerve conduction velocity, triceps recovery rate, and histological assessments indicate that VSD play a role in promoting nerve damage repair.…”

“…However, there is little relevant literature regarding the use of NPWT as an adjunct to wound closure in patients with tumors. Oh et al (25) assessed the efficacy of NPWT in conjunction with secondary full-thickness skin grafting for the treatment of melanoma on the foot, and observed acceptable functional and cosmetic outcomes. Katz et al (26) used NPWT as an adjunct to surgery for lymphangioma in children.…”

“…According to previous reports, it took approximately 12-18 weeks to close the defects (mean defect size: 32.6-36.5 cm 2 ) [54,59]. Despite these drawbacks, it has the advantages of avoiding a secondary wound for tissue harvesting, a smaller scar because of the natural contraction of the wound, and granulation tissue that acts as a cushion to absorb impact while walking [54].…”

“…Despite these drawbacks, it has the advantages of avoiding a secondary wound for tissue harvesting, a smaller scar because of the natural contraction of the wound, and granulation tissue that acts as a cushion to absorb impact while walking [54]. Recently, the effect of negative pressure wound therapy in addition to secondary intention healing has been investigated [59]. Compared with secondary intention healing alone, there was no difference in time to complete wound healing.…”
