Comparison of MRI/US Fusion Targeted Biopsy and Systematic Biopsy in Biopsy-Naïve Prostate Patients with Elevated Prostate-Specific Antigen: A Diagnostic Study

Abstract: Purpose This study aimed to compare the detection rate of prostate cancer (PCa) between targeted biopsy and systematic biopsy. Patients and Methods A total of 671 patients who underwent both targeted biopsy and systematic biopsy were included in this study. The stratified analysis was conducted based on Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PIRADS) scores, region of interest load (ROI-load). Results There was no statistical difference i… Show more

“…Patients who met the criteria for prostate biopsy were scheduled for transrectal prostate biopsy the day after the examination. Biopsies were performed by a number of senior urologists using the US BARD biopsy needles using the 12+X puncture method, in which 1-2 needles were punctured as the X-needle for suspicious areas suggested on nuclear magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound, and the rest of the area was punctured by the systematic 12-needle puncture method ( 43 , 44 ). Each needle of tissue was individually placed into a fixation vial containing 10% methanol aqueous solution, marked with the hospitalization number and date of puncture, and uniformly sent to the Department of Pathology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University for examination, where the histopathological results were recorded and diagnosed by a senior pathologist.…”

“…The required sequence was obtained as described previously [10]. Transperineal 12-needle system puncture and X-needle targeted puncture was performed with the transrectal ultrasound and MRI image fusion software [11]. Imaging and pathological criteria according to PI-RADS Guidelines V2.1 and Genitourinary Society Pathology and International Society of Urological Pathology Prostate Cancer Guidelines [12].…”
