“…Comparing gas nitriding and plasma nitriding, Anichkina et al, [14], verified that the growth rate of the diffusion layer for the ion nitriding of a low alloy steel is greater than that obtained by gas nitriding. Plasma nitriding is faster than conventional gas nitriding due to the different mechanisms of nitrogen introduction into the metal [15].…”

“…Results of vacuum nitriding of steels in an arrunonia atmosphere fed cyclically into an electric furnace are described in [8]. It is shown that the rate of this process is much higher than in gas nitriding.…”

“…A glow discharge is excited between the cathode and the anode, and gas ions bombard the surface of the cathode, heating it to a saturation temperature of 470 -580~ The process is conducted at an operating voltage of 400 -1100 V for 1 to 24 h [1]. Results of ion nitriding for the studied steel in an atmosphere of dissociated ammonia in comparison with results of gas nitriding are presented in Table 1 [8]. It can be seen that the ion method is preferable to gas nitriding as regards the ultimate bending strength and the rate of nitrogen saturation.…”
