Comparison of methods for the measurement of radiation dose distributions in high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy: Ge‐doped optical fiber, EBT3 Gafchromic film, and PRESAGE® radiochromic plastic

Abstract: The comparative response of three emerging dosimetry systems for clinical brachytherapy dose distribution measurement has been investigated. Ge-doped optical fibers have excellent spatial resolution for single-direction measurement but are currently too large for complex dose distribution assessment. The use of PRESAGE(®) with optical-CT readout gave promising results in the measurement of true 3D dose distributions but further development work is required to reduce noise and improve dynamic range for brachyth… Show more

“…Branchytherapy has the advantage of focusing the radiation dose within a 1 cm diameter treatment volume and quickly disappearing thereafter [18]. For NPC, this feature maximizes the radiation dose delivered to the residual lesions, and minimizes the exposure of normal adjacent organs to irradiation [9].…”

“…Radiochromic film dosimeters are frequently used for measurements of planar dose distributions, because they have advantageous properties compared to other two-dimensional detectors, such as diodes, ionization chamber arrays, optical fibers and gel dosimeters (Palmer et al, 2013). Radiochromic films show great potentiality in particular in applications where there is a very high dose gradient and relatively high absorbed dose rates (Soares, 2007).…”

“…Films were scanned in red-green-blue (RGB) format using a 48-bit scanner (Epson Expression 10000 XL) at 72 dpi, in transmission mode, and with no color or sharpness corrections. EBT3 film is energy independent down to energies as low as 50 keV (Massillon-Jl 2012) and use in 192 Ir brachytherapy applications has been previously validated (Palmer et al 2013). All film measurements were made at the surface as well as depths of 2 mm and 6 mm in a stack of RMI 457 solid water of 8 mm total thickness.…”
