Comparison of mental distress in patients with low back pain and a population-based control group measured by Symptoms Check List – A case-referent study

Abstract: Low back pain patients who are sick-listed or at risk of being sick-listed, are more mentally distressed compared to a randomly selected sample of the general Danish population. Self-reported symptoms of somatization, anxiety, phobic anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, depression and hostility are all more common among patients with low back pain compared to the general population.

“…We found modest phenotypic correlations (0.17-0.25) between sick leave due to back pain, sick leave due to common mental disorders and disability pension. The phenotypic correlations between sick leave due to back pain and sick leave due to common mental disorders were lower than expected, considering previous research has found back pain and common mental disorders are often comorbid (Christensen et al, 2015;Dorner et al, 2016). This discrepancy may be due to the fact that we used sick leave due to these disorders as measures.…”

“…This might support the works of Murberg and Bru [ 17 ] and Eckhoff and Kvernmo [ 15 ], focusing on school-related stress. Looking at possible school-related stressors in a sample of 531 pupils aged 13–16 years, Murberg and Bru [ 18 ] found an association between these given stressors and psychosomatic symptoms. Eckhoff and Kvernmo [ 15 ] presented similar findings in a recent study based on The Norwegian Arctic Adolescent Health Study.…”

“…List-90 (SCL-90) was established by L.R. Derogatis in 1975 and widely used in psychiatric outpatient examination because of its high authenticity in evaluating various mental health surveys [16,17]. The Cronbach α for the SCL-90 was 0.99, split-half reliability coefficient was 0.98, and KMO was 0.99, respectively.…”
