Comparison of mechanical properties of various PVD hard coatings for forming tools

Abstract: In the present paper the basic mechanical properties of PVD hard coatings, which are currently used in Konč ar Alati company for wear protection of forming tools manufactured on request of the Electrolux Group, with emphasis on the Electrolux Home Products company, Denmark A/S, have been compared. This company has high demands on tool performance for machining and forming of several different workpiece materials, such as sheet steel, stainless steel, aluminium and Teflon coated sheet. Two different deposition … Show more

“…Surface engineering of cutting tools and mechanical components by the deposition of hard transition metal nitride and carbide coatings has long been proven an effective way to improve their tribological properties, and therefore, their service life [1][2][3][4]. Titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coatings are very interesting coatings that combine the high hardness and low friction coefficient of the TiC phases and the high toughness of the TiN phases [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…These corners produced 4000 parts before the coating had worn off. In the meantime, the spare corners were coated with TiCN nanostructured layer, as this coating should increase adhesive wear resistance and provide longer lifetime [6,7]. Its microhardness was 3000 HV 0 05 , comparable to TiAlN coating.…”

“…It depends on the mechanical characteristic studies of 6 different PVD hard coatings. It was discovered that CrAlN (Alcrona)/D2 and CrAlN/Vanadis 6 combinations had the greatest adhesion; TiAlN/D2 had the largest micro hardness; and WC/C hard coating had the shortest indentation modulus and abrasion coefficient [22].…”
