Comparison of mandibular vertical growth in hemifacial microsomia patients treated with early distraction or not treated: Follow up till the completion of growth
“…They concluded that the delay of DO may be the best option to prevent secondary intervention in cases with severe retrognathia, smaller ramus height, and vertical growth pattern. 13 In the 2012 study by Meazzini et al, 14 it is clear that the facial proportions of untreated HFM patients are maintained throughout the entire growth period, and the same proportions revert to their original asymmetry after mandibular distraction. They proposed that even though short-term aesthetic and psychological advantages of DO are well accepted, early surgery should be applied only after careful patient selection and honest clarification of the long-term recurrence because of genetically influenced craniofacial growth patterns.…”
Bone distraction once seemed a promising long-term option for treatment of craniofacial microsomia. However, this has not proven effective for all cases, and most patients needed subsequent orthognathic surgery.

“…The results of our study suggest an even greater issue in the lack of reproducibility when using the Pruzansky and Kaban classification system. This system has seen widespread use in the literature 8,[19][20][21][22] ; however, our study calls its use into question. If classification cannot occur in a systematic and reproducible fashion, the value of an outcome-based study to the reader will be largely nullified, since patient groups cannot be easily identified.…”

“…al. although shortterm changes obtained with unilateral distraction osteogenesis of the deficientSascending ramus of the mandible are extremely satisfying in hemifacial microsomia patients, the genetic input Open Access Journal of Surgery on neuro-muscular and skeletal architecture tends to slowly mould the distracted skeleton back to the original configuration [4]. Honest communication with the families and professional psychological support are mandatory in planning the treatment of young patients affected by hemifacial microsomia.…”
